The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter says they are at full capacity given the frigid temperatures on the Prairies.
Executive director Valerie Lazicki indicates they are still trying to make sure that no one is left outdoors.
“Every bed is full every night. Our lobby has people welcomed into the lobby. We’re just saying come in. We are making room for everyone. At least people are out of the cold and we are feeding them and making sure that they aren’t getting frostbitten or worse.”
Lazicki notes that everyone is chipping in to help with even minor chores as they try to make the best of a difficult situation. She says the community is sharing “lots of goodies” at this time leading up to Christmas and everyone “is enjoying each other’s company.”
However some of the needs are still warm clothing, especially boots (size 8-12 are in high demand) as many of the clients are still in running shoes. As well, staff would welcome old ski pants and boots that can be repurposed – also mitts and face coverings (balaclava).
The shelter has 28 beds and is filled every night. The lobby has about 16 people during the day. Lazicki says they are encouraging people to stay inside and not go out or if they plan not to return that night, they are advised the space will be taken by someone else.
With the holiday weekend in mind, Lazicki says community members could pitch in a few items for stocking stuffers.
“If anyone wants to stop by the Dollar Store or something and get some things that are good for stocking stuffers. We do a gift bag for each of our clients in the shelter. Plus everyone who is going to be in our lobby on Christmas Day and Gibney House – our second stage housing. So we make a little gift bag for everyone.”
Temperatures are not forecast to see meaningful improvement before next Tuesday.
