Battle of the Badges skates off Saturday

Lloydminster first responders will drop the gloves and pick up hockey sticks as they hit the ice on Saturday evening at the Civic Centre for a good cause.

The Battle of the Badges Todd Gustavson Memorial Hockey Tournament is back on Feb. 18, from 7:15 p.m. at the Centennial Civic Centre.

The Lloydminster Fire Department and the local RCMP will put their hockey skills to the test with proceeds going to support The Olive Tree, Salvation Army Lloydminster and Lloydminster Region Health Foundation’s Project Sunrise.

“The Lloydminster Fire Department may have different badges, different mandates and weaker hockey skills,” jokes Cst. Kelsey Davidge. “But we’re all on the same team when it comes to supporting our community.”

The police will be lacing up for the Olive Tree and the firefighters will skate to support the Salvation Army.

Bill Heesing, Assistant Fire Chief chirps back, “It’s always an honour to participate in the Battle of the Badges charity event against the RCMP – even if they play dirty tricks on the ice.” He adds,”The funds we raise will go towards supporting local charities and helping those in need.”

The CCC will open doors from 6:30 p.m. for the family event. Admission is by cash donation or non-perishable food items.

Suggested food items include canned fruit, apple sauces, school snack packs, pasta sauce, pancake mix, syrup, jam, canned meat, nut-free granola bars, crackers, canned soup, instant oatmeal (individual packets) and boxed potatoes.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
