Immigrant survey seeks to assess needs of newcomers

A new survey is seeking to gauge the needs of newcomers to Lloydminster and Vermilion areas.

The Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership is offering gift cards to the first 100 immigrants who take the online poll and giving taxi vouchers for anyone who needs to attend a follow-up focus group on March 13. There will also be a draw for a couple gift cards at the focus group session.

Kemoh Mansaray, coordinator with Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership is conducting the second of these surveys. He says they need to get the data to tackle the needs of people who are new to the area.

“If you can’t measure things, then you will not be able to address the issues. So the importance of the survey is actually to get the gaps that are in Lloydminster and find ways to support immigrants. Or what is available that the immigrant does not know? With this survey I’ll be able to gather what is available, what is not available and then we can find a way to actually address the challenges and the issues to support immigrants.”

Mansaray says there are some aspects of the first survey that have been dealt with like the multicultural festival LloydFest and as well the Filipino Festival held last summer. He adds the City has also made a recreation access pass for its facilities.

As they seek to document the concerns of newcomers to Lloydminster and area, Mansaray says a big concern is the lack of public transit.

“That is challenging for newcomers who don’t know yet how to drive in this country. Or even if they know how to drive, they cannot afford to buy a car. If they are spending all their money on transportation, they will rather go to bigger cities that have transportation where they can get a bus pass which will cost them maybe $70 to $80 depending on the city.”

The survey links are available online in English, French, Spanish, Tagalog and Arabic. The deadline is Mar. 10.
