Historical building damaged by fire

Damage estimates are pending following the investigation of a fire that damaged the Old Minster Log Church at Weaver Park.

On Sunday Mar. 12, Lloydminster fire crews were called to the historical building which city officials cite as one of the oldest structures in the border city.

Upon arrival, the fire department found an individual whom they believed to be a trespasser trying to put out the fire. They determined that the fire started in the wood-stove before spreading to the cedar siding and floorboards. Fire crews put out the blaze, and the individual found in the building was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The city says the Old Minster Log Church which was built in 1904 by the Barr Colonists holds significant historical value as it served many businesses and functions until it was purchased by City Council in 1961 and rededicated at Weaver Heritage Park in 1963.

The structure was braced in 2020 and then closed in 2021 due to structural issues.

The city in a release has expressed its commitment to the restoration plan which was completed in 2022 by Administration.
