Summer may be drawing to a close, but not before a new downtown mural is unveiled from this year’s youth graffiti cleanup.
The alleyway between Giant Tiger and Tandoori Tadka Lloydminster has been transformed by the youth artwork that features the sunglasses of summer.
Teagan Davies has been involved in this community project for the last four years. He did the wall preparation.
“I washed and then painted the walls. I worked on every one of the sunglasses
Youth from the Lloydminster Youth Centre who brought out their artistic talent were onboard for this year’s artwork. The youth graffiti cleanup, which is now in its eighth year, gets its paint supplies from the local Home Hardware. The program is also mentored by members of the Lloydminster RCMP.
Amber Fast, art programmer with the Lloydminster Museum and Archives explains the pop art sunglasses theme for this year.
She says the best part is seeing the kids get involved and being able to contribute to the community.
Mayor Gerald Aalbers says Family and Community Support Services started the venture in conjunction with businesses that came to the city offering to help clean up graffiti.
The mayor handed out certificates to the youth and commended everyone involved including the repeat painters.
“That speaks volumes. He would not have come back if he hadn’t enjoy himself. Maybe it’s the pizza. Maybe it’s the fun of the painting, but I think it’s just the camaraderie that comes with it and having the involvement of the youth centre and their programmers.”
