Vermilion RCMP arrest two people on gun charges

A call about a suspicious vehicle has led to charges being laid against two Albertans.

On Aug. 18, near midnight, Vermilion RCMP got a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the end of the driveway to a rural home east of Vermilion, in the County of Vermilion River.

Police arrived at the scene and found the vehicle with two people who were passed out inside. Investigators report finding two unsecured guns in the vehicle, one of which was modified so as to make it prohibited.

Vermilion RCMP have arrested and charged two suspects.

Bowdrie Patterson, 32-years of Wainwright is facing:

  • Possession of a prohibited weapon
  • Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited firearm
  • Fail to comply with release order

Lara Stoyko, 33-years of Vermilion, was charged with:

  • Possession of a prohibited weapon
  • Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited firearm
  • Fail to comply with recognizance

Patterson and Stoyko were brought before a justice of the peace.

Stoyko was released on a Release Order with court set for Sep. 18 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion. Patterson was remanded into custody and is due in Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster on Sep. 12.

In expressing their commitment to working with the community to improve safety, Sgt. Corey Buckingham of Vermilion RCMP said,” In this case an otherwise innocuous suspicious vehicle complaint quickly turned into a much more serious investigation involving a prohibited firearm. I continue to encourage folks to call in suspicious activity as it happens.”
