Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre hosts Orange Shirt Day program at city hall

For the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sep. 30), the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre (LNFC) is planning a walk to city hall on Friday, Sep. 29.

Organizers say the community walk will start at 1 p.m. at the centre and head over to city hall where there will be a program of activities and refreshments. A few speakers will be sharing on the program, a round dance is also planned along with other cultural pieces.

Also known as Orange Shirt Day, organizers add the activities will honour those who survived Residential Schools and those who did not return home.

Both Lloydminster school divisions are planning activities to observe the day with students wearing orange shirts and observing a moment of silence, as well as attending the activities planned by the LNFC. Other activities planned at schools include bannock making, teepee raising, storytelling and orange handprint crafts.

The final Truth and Reconciliation report estimates between 4,000 and 6,000 children did not make it home, but it is difficult to estimate the exact number of children who died while attending Residential Schools in Canada.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
