Indigenous people in Saskatchewan who want to reclaim their Indigenous name will no longer have to pay the fees for a criminal record check and fingerprints.
Effective immediately, the fees are being removed, says the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police.
In a statement, the association acknowledges both the historical and lived trauma of Residential School Survivors and the Sixties Scoop, and says it is honouring the Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action number 17 which stipulates all levels of government enable residential school Survivors and their families to reclaim their names.
In Saskatchewan, anyone wanting a legal name change can begin the process using the information online.
