Former Holy Rosary students receive Governor General medals

Three former Holy Rosary High School students who are now pursuing studies at the University of Saskatchewan have finally got their Governor General medals in hand.

The students were awarded in 2021, 2022, and this year, but as the current governor general, Mary Simon was only appointed in 2021 and each official designs a new medal, the students were given their certificates until the medals were finally available.

The honour recognizes high academic performance at high schools across the country, usually above 97 or 98 per cent.

The recipients are Halle Hanson – 2021, Holly Gebhardt – 2022, and Caden Thiessen – 2023.

At a school ceremony on Wednesday honouring over 100 high achievers, Lexa Thiessen, Caden’s younger sister who plans to join her brother at the U of S to study chartered accounting shares the sacrifices of excelling at studies.

“You spend countless amounts of time studying and even sacrificing a sport – you might have to take that off. It’s just hard that way.”

She says she looks up to her brother and her family is very proud of him and the hard work he continues to put in.

School principal, Jeremy Blais says the high school is handing out awards this week to grades 9-12 for academic excellence and also student life in the last academic year.

“We have our students that received their honour roll certificate, distinction certificate, and grade distinction certificate. We also had some Holy Rosary faith leadership awards, and we had an outstanding student award as well. We also gave out bronze, silver, and gold medals to our students for academics. So, there are a lot of students that are being honoured this week.”

The Governor General’s Medal was first awarded in 1873.
