Lac La Biche RCMP are responding to a serious motor vehicle collision between an SUV and a tractor trailer unit on Highway 881 at Range Road 94, near Heart Lake First Nation.
Highway 881 was closed to regular traffic yesterday afternoon as an evacuation route for people fleeing the wildfire in the Fort McMurray area and to ensure only emergency personnel were heading towards to blaze.
Both the driver and passenger of the SUV involved in the accident were declared deceased on scene. Emergency services remain on scene.
The highway in both directions is impassable and traffic is being rerouted at Highway 881 and Range Road 55 to Highway 63, which is also an evacuation route for the residents of Fort McMurray and area.
The Lac La Biche RCMP are investigating the cause of this collision and no other details are available at this time, including whether or not the high volume of traffic do to the evacuation played a role in the accident.
