A couple Lloydminster Bobcats players traded in their skates on Tuesday for a speaking part at some local schools.
The players were in the classroom to do a little guest reading as part of Saskatchewan Library Week.
At College Park School two defenders took up the challenge to keep the attention of the first graders. Orin Olson from Chaplain, Saskatchewan is in his second season with the local AJHL team, while Michael Carter comes to Lloydminster from Peterborough, Ontario.
Carter says it means a lot to him to be able to read to the kids as when he was growing up, he had hockey players come to his school to share the wonder of bringing words on a page to life.
“Just to be able to come in that position and give back to the kids and to read for a bit. And obviously they have a lot of smiles on their faces – they just love it. So, it means a lot. I enjoy doing it.”
The players took turns reading to kids from two books – ‘Where’s My Hockey Sweater’ and ‘How To Catch A Monster.’
“Reading is awesome. We have to do it in our lives every day and being someone that the kids look up to and showing them how important it is. That’s pretty awesome.”
Back on the ice, the Bobcats will be in Spruce Grove on Wednesday evening to play the Saints.
