A haunted house tradition invoked fear in the nerves of Lloydminster Comprehensive High School students on Monday as the seniors spent the day touring the younger grades through their house of fears.
On Sunday the cohort spent some five hours building a fortified house of phobias in the school gym. They spared no fear as they deployed spiders, blood, water, and a trip to the dentist to expose their guests to the various phobias that afflict the human condition.
Grade 12, science major and drama student, Emry Marchand conjured the inner workings of the haunted shenanigans.
“So, we start off with Trypophobia – the fear of holes and spikes in the stairwell, then we go up to the fear of dentists, blood, and drills. Then when you come down the stairs, we have Arachnophobia with snakes and all that fun stuff. And then we get the last phobia, which is the fear of deep waters, as well as claustrophobia in our tight cramped hallway.”
Leadership teacher Dwayne Jeffery says the haunted house tradition goes back at least 10 years. He says they use different themes each year and change the location to other areas in the school. He explains the activity fosters team building.
“In the leadership class, we have about 80 kids, and kids find where they fit. We have kids who are actors. We have kids who are behind the scenes doing the painting. We have kids who promote the activity with posters in the hallway.”
Kids left the haunted house saying they were really spooked.
The leadership group at Lloyd Comp will soon start their next activity which is Rudolph Roundup to support women fleeing domestic abuse.
