More than 1,900 calls for help were made between April 2022 and March 2023 to the emergency shelter in Lloydminster that supports women and children.
Officials with the Lloydminster Interval Home Society which offers support to women fleeing domestic abuse add that the shelter took in 162 women and 167 children, but unfortunately turned away several families including 29 children.
Also, even though they have expanded the number of beds from 21 to 33, they are still forced to turn away about seven women and children per week due to the high demand and lack of sufficient space.
The Lloydminster Interval Home is hosting an event to kick-off Family Violence Prevention Month. The activity will take place on Wednesday Nov. 1 at the Servus Sports Centre from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
One in three Albertans are affected by family violence. Saskatchewan leads provinces in domestic violence rates with Alberta third on the list, say Interval Home officials.
