Sask benefits being suspended for prolific violent offenders

Prolific violent offenders in Saskatchewan with outstanding warrants will now have any government benefits coming to them suspended.

The province effective Nov. 1 has introduced the Warrant Intelligence Team within the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety. The new group will also share information that will aid police in the apprehension of these individuals.

“Violent individuals with outstanding warrants for arrest should not be benefiting from taxpayer dollars,” Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Paul Merriman said.

The Ministry of Social Services is on board with its partners in the Ministry of Corrections, to support the work of the Warrant Intelligence Team. However, social services “will continue to help the families of the offender to have their financial needs met,” said Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky.

The new measures were first outlined last December.
