UPDATE – Islay train crash: Transportation Safety Board of Canada to investigate

Following an accident this morning between 3 fluid-hauler trucks and a train, the national Transportation Safety Board is looking into the incident.

A team of investigators from the TSB will be attending the site of a level-crossing accident near Islay. The TSB will gather information in order to assess what happened to cause the collision.

The TSB is an independent agency, which investigates incidents in marine, pipeline, railway, and aviation transportation. The Board’s aim is to improve transportation safety and assign fault, or determine whether there is civil or criminal liability in regards to accidents.

Highway 893 from Highway 16 to Township Road 512 is currently closed to traffic as a result of the crash, until workers can clear the derailment, which expected to take until tomorrow to complete.

As well, ATCO Electric has advised the customers near Islay and in the northern rural area should expected outages at crews work on the tracks. Power is expected to return by 3:30 p.m.
