AHS gets new leader

Alberta Health Services has a new head as the former leader of the Alberta Medical Association is being announced to take up the top job.

Athana Mentzelopoulos has been named President and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS), effective Dec. 11.

Mentzelopoulos has two decades of public sector leadership. She has also been the deputy minister in various portfolios in both the Alberta and B.C. governments and as EMS provisional lead and an advisor within AHS.

Officials note the provincial health authority has its current focus on reducing emergency department wait times, improving EMS response times, increasing access to surgeries, and improving patient flow.
