Barr Colony School will cease to exist as of July 1, 2024.
The Lloydminster Public School Division is also closing Avery School and repurposing the newer portions of Barr Colony to house students from Avery School.
The decision was made at the LPSD board meeting on Wednesday night.
Parents and the vice principal of Barr Colony made several presentations at the board meeting to save the school.
Among the issues raised were the needs of the numerous special needs kids at Barr Colony who would face what they called an unsettling transition.
Also, the cost of bussing the children from Barr Colony to other schools and crowding other schools to accommodate the 350 kids presently at Barr Colony.
The board in a statement says the “decision was not made lightly, and it recognizes the impact this will have on the Barr Colony School” community.
Meanwhile, Avery School, built in 1956, faces high maintenance costs.
