Guitar 10 students strum for final grade

A lunchtime concert performance is what will score the final grade for the Guitar 10 class at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School as the students across Saskatchewan are wrapping up the first semester.

Over 20 students are taking the class offered for the second year at the high school.

Grade 10’s Autumn MacDonald enjoys writing and singing country music. She is taking the class to supplement her self-taught skills and has already done a few paid gigs in her spare time.

“My favourite artist is definitely Zach Bryan, not because of the way that his music sounds, but because of the way that he writes. He uses a lot of his soul and that’s how I like to write,” says MacDonald, wrapping her set on the Drama Room stage with fellow students and a few staff in the audience.

Music teacher, Stephen Davis explains they are growing the program.

“We are transitioning into a Guitar 10, 20 and 30 class. This year it’s just Guitar 10 and 20. Next year we are going to be adding the grade 12 class as well.”

The students got a songbook at the start of the course and had to choose a song to perform for their final grade. They will get another shot at live performances when Garage Band hits the stage in June and Davis adds they will also be doing a few gigs in the community.
