U-15 Steelers and Lakeland College Rustlers Women team up to pass on the skills

A skating clinic for beginners and possibly future high-performance skaters held centre ice at the outdoor rink at E.S. Laird Middle School on Thursday.

The -10 weather and mainly sunny skies suited some of the more experienced skaters along with the newbies.

U15 AA Steelers right-winger Addison Moore was happy to help out the youngsters as they learned to bend their knees to stay upright.

The team has two games on the weekend against Airdrie and Red Deer who are coming to Lloydminster on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, forward Asha Petrie with the Lakeland College Rustlers Women’s team said they are always happy to give back to the community.

“Our team is very community-based and without the community around us, we wouldn’t have our team. So giving back anytime we can and just being out in the community spreading the word that there is a women’s hockey team.”

Petrie is in her second year of Elementary Education and will have a few more seasons with the team before she graduates.

The women’s team is currently second in the ACAC behind NAIT. All of the staff on the team volunteer their time.

The Lakeland College Rustlers Women’s hockey team is off this weekend and students will welcome the extra time to catch up on studies. The team will play SAIT on Feb. 2 in Lloydminster.
