Holy Rosary student awarded scholarship by LCSD

A Holy Rosary High School student who has been leading the livestreaming effort of Christmas concerts across the school division is getting a scholarship from the division to use when she graduates.

Lloydminster Catholic School Division officials were at the Synergy Studios on Tuesday, Feb. 13 to pass on the good news to Mya Tupper in front of fellow media communications students. Tupper, who is making plans to attend film school in Vancouver, is getting an extra $500 to go toward her dream of becoming a director.

“I’ve been looking to going to Vancouver Film School for about a year and a half now since I realized that film is my passion, and honestly anything in the media,” said Tupper.

The grade 11 student, with help from some of her peers, has led the effort over the last two years to livestream the Christmas concerts for all the schools allowing relatives in far away places to view their grandkids on stage.

“We had a couple of people in grade 12. One from grade 10. Another in grade 11 and I think we had three from grades eight and nine,” said Tupper as she wants to build on this legacy when she leaves school.

With mentorship from videographer Jason Whiting the team has led a two and sometimes three-camera shoot of the various concerts, with nine productions taking place last season.

Tupper is specializing in photography and media studies at high school. She started media studies in grade 10 with communications teacher Skye Fergusson and says that was a jump-off point to the livestream productions.

The school division will look to livestream more events including sports as the student-led effort continues to blossom. But for now, parents and relatives will continue to enjoy the recordings of the concerts which are saved online and students like Tupper are rising to the challenge as they explore their dreams in the world of digital communications.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
