A junior Barons football program is getting ready to roll at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.
The program will be open to grades eight and nine and campaign in the Saskatoon Kinsmen League from late August to November.
Head coach Kieran Link says they will be holding a two-week camp in June as they seek a 40-player roster and a parents’ night is happening this Thursday as they seek to gauge interest and support. The info night will be held in the school’s library from 7:30 p.m.
“Our team will have grade eights that will be at the middle school level. Those players will come over to the Comp to practise and then play game days there. And then of course we will have the grade nines at our school,” says Link, who has been coaching for 15 years but has taken up the head coach job in the last four years.
With the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School expanding to include grade nines this fall, Link explains this was the impetus and “an excellent opportunity to provide tackle football for them.”
The Saskatoon Kinsmen League has about 10 teams and has operated for over 50 years. The Lloydminster Junior Barons will be tested by teams from Saskatoon, Martensville, Prince Albert, and North Battleford areas with games on the weekend while the Senior Barons will play on Fridays.
The junior football program will also be open to students wanting to play at the Bantam level.
