Davies family get Alberta Century Farm and Ranch Award

The Davies family are the recipients of an Alberta Century Farm and Ranch Award plaque from the premier and the minister of agriculture.

The Davies, a fourth-generation family-run operation, with the fifth generation now pitching in, had the original homestead bought by William Davies in 1920. However, it was listed as 1921, the year the census was taken.

Next to lead the operation was George followed up by his sons Ritchie and David. Vee Tee Feedlot rolled out in 1973 with 700 head of cattle.

Ritchie’s children Ted, Don, and Jennifer are involved in the family business and the next generation is already chomping at the bit.

Vee Tee Feeders has over 10,000 acres of owned and rented land. At one time they had a herd of over 1,500 but have scaled back to about 700, and are running about 7,000 head in the feedlot now.

Lloydminster-Vermilion-Wainwright MLA Garth Rowswell delivered the award on behalf of the province.

“I congratulate the Davies for their hard work and perseverance and wish them many more generations of operation,” said Rowswell.

The family reflected that “it’s very nice to be recognized for sticking to it this long.”

Vee Tee Feeders is located along Highway 17 north of Lloydminster.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
