Pitch In Week launches at Bishop Lloyd

If you happen to muscle the energy to clean the sand that’s in the drain in front of your property, before the street sweepers, you need to know that it’s got to go in the grey bin and not the green.

That’s just one nugget as grade eights at Bishop Lloyd Middle School were on hand for the launch of this year’s Pitch In Week which hits a high note on Saturday, May 4 with the Household Recycling Waste Roundup at the Lloydminster Exhibition.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers encourages residents who park on the street to look out for the street sweeping signs in their neighbourhoods.

“We give you a couple of days’ notice. And we ask you to keep an eye out. If you hear the machine on the street and you are still parked on the street, it gives you time to move.”

Aalbers stresses the safety aspect around the big street sweepers, but notes keeping vehicles and other obstructions off the street allows the crews to do a good job.

Aalbers stresses the need to keep a clean scene all year round, saying as mayor he gets a lot of compliments from people who drive through the city and notice the cleanliness along Highway 16.

The kids and the mayor got to cleaning up in the school area with help from GFL Environmental staff

Brett Chambers with GFL says they have been onboard over the last few years. In talking about contamination of the organics bin, he sees the importance of getting the message to the kids.

“Honestly, getting out to these guys is way more important than going to the older generation,” says Chambers.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
