When worn correctly, using a helmet can protect your head from serious injury by some 60 per cent.
The straight-up-sounding statistic comes along with some other nuggets for Bicycle Safety Week, May 12-18.
“Adults can set a good example for children by wearing their helmets on every bike ride,” reminds Robyn Stewart, Child Injury Prevention Program Coordinator at the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute.
The group notes each year in Saskatchewan, children are hospitalized for bicycle-related injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. Scrapes and bruises are an expected part of learning to ride a bike. However, helmet use can reduce the risk of serious injuries with life-long impacts. The group has several resources available including information about how to prevent cycling-related injuries in children.
Motorists are also urged to look out for kids on their bikes as more activities roll out with the warmer weather.
The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute also has numerous educational resources for
school-aged children. More information including virtual presentations is available on its website.
