The mayor of Vermilion, Gregory Throndson is being sanctioned for the remainder of his term in office, effective immediately.
Vermilion Town Council voted unanimously to impose the restrictions on May 6, citing “recent events” and following a special meeting on April 30.
Council says after an extensive investigation into the matter, deputy mayor Kevin Martin on behalf of council brought forward sanctions to restrict the mayor.
Council views the sanctions as reaffirming Vermilion’s “commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of its organization and residents.”
Meanwhile, Throndson made a statement to council at its meeting on Tuesday, May 7 saying that after an incident on Mar. 17, 2023, in which he says he kicked a door that subsequently did not work, he has a bill from council for $7,129. An elected official who owes council more than $500 for more than 90 days faces disqualification.
Throndson came into office in the fall of 2021. The next municipal election in Alberta is due on October 20, 2025.
The statement on its website concludes that council stands together “to build more transparency and accountability.”
