Community garden being set up next to Red Bicycle

The 49th Street Community Garden was launched on Friday, May 10, next door to Red Bicycle on land which the communications company is pitching in for the green thumb effort.

Community members have long wanted a garden space – a green oasis in the downtown area. Councillor David Lopez, who is on the Downtown Area Revitalization Committee credits the heavy lifting of Amy Roper, over some two years for getting the shovel in the ground.

“Amy spearheaded this. She is one of our board members. She led the effort to get this community garden going. Somewhere to beautify downtown, somewhere to bring people if they need a quiet place,” say Lopez.

Lopez saluted Roper’s effort for getting corporate, community and Indigenous uptake as the project continues to germinate.

Traditional medicine plants, vegetables and more will be in the mix at the 49th Street Community Garden that’s located between 51 and 52 Avenues across from the Servus Credit Union car park.

Lloydminster Comprehensive and Holy Rosary High School students have donated raised plant beds to the project.

“It’s exciting to see where it is today, and even more exciting to see where it will be in the fall when we have got a harvest,” says Lopez.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
