New airline wanted to serve Lloydminster airport

With WestJet’s departure in April, residents of Lloydminster are weighing in as the city makes its case to get a new airline to connect the Border City to the world. 

One of the issues being raised is an upgrade to the Lloydminster Airport to meet the needs of a possible air carrier to move citizens from Lloydminster to Calgary, Edmonton, or Saskatoon. 

While there is some sentiment that the services at the airport are adequate, some people want washrooms in the secure area, concession for food and drink, and better equipment for precision landing, including de-icing, especially as the weather is not ideal for about six months of the year. 

The city is working with HM Aero Aviation and ASM Global to build the case for a new airline to fly into Lloydminster. 

Owner of Lambear Travel, Rachel Lambert sees the importance of air connectivity for Lloydminster but notes a shortfall of the former air carrier. 

“Honestly one of the biggest concerns we had with the previous service we had with WestJet was reliability. (They were late), or they didn’t go, or cancelled. What does Lloydminster need to do, to bring in an aircraft that can handle flying in Canadian weather?” 

Mayor Gerald Aalbers says there is no reason why Lloydminster cannot have two or three contractors serving the Lloydminster Airport as he refers to Red Deer as an example. 

“We have land to grow. We have the ability to build maintenance facilities. I know the City of Cold Lake is supporting Portage College on aircraft mechanical engineers. The opportunity exists here. It takes investment. It takes a business plan.” 

In calling on contractors who would like to service the airport, Aalbers says they want services to be delivered on a regular, timely basis to the area. 

The city is hosting another open house session on Tuesday, May 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lloydminster Airport Terminal Building (8301 75 Avenue). Also, May 15 from noon to 1 p.m. at Second Cup Lloydminster (Unit 5 1404 50 Avenue).
