Lloydminster Interval Home gets over $580K for unfunded spaces

The Lloydminster Interval Home is getting $586,993.00 from the Government of Alberta for the fiscal year 2024-25. The support will go towards 13 previously unfunded beds, enabling the shelter to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals and families in need.

“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Alberta for recognizing the critical need for shelter support and for their commitment to helping us provide essential services. This funding will have a profound impact on our ability to offer safety, support, and education to those experiencing domestic violence and other crises,” says Angela Rooks-Trotzuk, Chief Executive Officer of the Lloydminster Interval Home Society.

Rooks-Trotzuk notes the challenge the non-profit is facing post-COVID to find funding for its programs. Since 1980, the organization has helped some 15,000 women and kids facing inter-personal violence.

“Our relationship with the Alberta government spans decades and has helped pave the way for many positive outcomes for those escaping inter-personal violence,” says Rooks-Trotzuk.

MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright, Garth Rowswell notes the organization is hiring new staff, and while this is a one-time payment, the discussion is ongoing as the need is constant.

“They are hiring new staff based on the fact that they got some money here. So, I can’t see just turning that off. If that comes, I’ll have some more advocating to do,” says Rowswell. “The work won’t stop. I’ve had numerous conversations with this group, and they have been advocating for a while.”

Rowswell noted that the 13 beds have been funded through the fundraising efforts of the non-profit and expressed his thanks to the children services minister for the support in moving this file forward.
