Lloyd Comp students rev up annual Car Show

Some 60 vehicles were on show with half of them having student input as the annual Lloydminster Comprehensive Car and Truck Show revved up the parking lot.

The tradition which dates to the 1990s with input from several community partners, dealerships, and auto shops has the prospect of students being apprenticed as they begin a career in auto mechanics.

Victoria Oldershaw, staff planner has been the lead on the event for the last 12 years and shares that there are over 10 categories with varying degrees of student input.

“Like Blood Sweat and Tears is a category where the students had to do all the work on the cars. They must prove this when they talk to the judges about it. Mr. McFarlane, our auto-shop teacher does those specifically.”

There were eight entries in that category this year, which was more than the contest has seen in the past, adds Oldershaw.

A fun category is Mom n’ Dad’s Money which featured a red Corvette which took that prize along with the People’s Choice. The sizzling double-prize winning convertible was driven by grade 12 student Maheen Mangla.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
