As we get deeper into outdoor activity season, off-road vehicle users are reminded of ways to avoid having their vehicles stolen.
According to Alberta RCMP, last year there were 1,624 “Theft of Other Motor Vehicles” reported in the province, with 147 of those incidents reported last June.
To avoid the theft of an ATV, dirtbike, or other off-road vehicle police advise users to not leave their keys in or near the vehicle when it is unattended and to keep it in a locked shed or garage when possible. Police also recommend having security cameras, especially at night, and keeping outdoor lights on or on a timer. Police also encourage having a record of the machine’s serial number and photos in case it is stolen.
According to police “thieves are less likely to target your property if you make it harder and less accessible for them to steal.”
