A liquid asphalt spill near the bulk cardlock on 52 Street has forced the closure of that area between 50 Avenue and 62 Avenue. Traffic is being detoured onto 59 Street north from the west side of the asphalt plant. On the east side of 52 Street, access from 50 Avenue onto the ring road (52 Street) is blocked completely.
The spill happened before 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. Lloydminster fire crews were called out to assist with shutting down the roadway. RCMP say the road is impassable and may be closed for several days.
The City of Lloydminster says the significant spill was from an industrial service company vehicle and that steps are being taken to limit environmental damage and the amount of asphalt entering the stormwater system.
Since the spill is on the Alberta side of the city, that province’s environmental agencies will be involved in further investigations.
An update will be forthcoming, but it is not known when the area will be re-opened to traffic, says the city.
UPDATE: Clean-up activites are underway and Alberta Environment is at the scene to lead further investigations, say city officials.
