Wainwright gets wheelchair accessible swing

Wainwright now has a wheelchair-accessible swing at the back of Morgan Place beside Kinsmen Park.

Della Lischka with the Quota Club of Wainwright says the swing came from a specialty company for $106,000 and was brought in through a partnership with the town.

“I got in touch with them, and I had some conversations with them if it would work in our area. Then I went to our town’s recreation department, and I had a good talk with our developer, and he was very much on board.”

Habitat Systems says its mission is to enhance communities in Western Canada. It has some 25 years in building inclusive play spaces.

Lischka says they had numerous fundraisers over nearly two years to get the funds for the venture. The installation of the swing started the second week in June. The club also purchased two wheelchair-accessible picnic tables.

“We had the town install them on concrete pads. So, anyone in a wheelchair can come right off the walking path and into the tables.”

The wheelchair-accessible swing is a recent addition to the Habitat company line-up.

The Quota Club has been in Wainwright since the 1960s and its activities are all about sharing. The volunteer group contributes to projects that foster inclusion for speech and hearing impaired and has previously fund-raised for technologies to support speech pathology.
