The 44th Terry Fox Run will lead off on Sep. 15 and organizers are celebrating the victories from years of cancer research which the fundraising goes towards.
The stats indicate that:
- On average, 94 per cent of kids diagnosed with all childhood cancers are expected to be alive five years after their diagnosis.
- Over 80 per cent for the five year survival rate of breast, prostate, melanoma, thyroid, testis, and Hodgkin lymphoma cancers
- Since 1988, cancer mortality rates are down 37 per cent in men and 22 per cent in women
- The five year survival rate for melanoma has nearly doubled from 50 per cent to 90 per cent using targeted therapies which target proteins that control how cancer cells grow, divide, and spread
- Â Average survival rates for all cancers combined have increased from 25 per cent in the 1940s to over 60 per cent today – and up to 90 per cent in some cases
But organizers note that with over 200 types of cancers, the road to eliminating all of them is long, and that’s why the run is so important, #NoMatterWhat.
Lloydminster firefighters raised $4,126 last year among 4000 teams for a total of $5.2 million.
