Saskatchewan teachers head to binding arbitration in December

The binding arbitration hearing for contract negotiations for Saskatchewan teachers is set for December 16-20 in Saskatoon.

Serving as the arbitrator is Daniel Ish, a former University of Saskatchewan law professor and dean of the College of Law.

The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, STF via its Teachers’ Bargaining Committee has put forward Dawn Harkness as its nominee to the panel. Harkness is a retired Saskatoon Public Schools teacher and principal. Her current portfolio includes university education programs.

Meanwhile, the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee (GTBC), has put forward Greg Chatlain, a former director of education for Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.

Saskatchewan teachers have been without a collective bargaining agreement since the end of August 2023. Collective bargaining talks which stalled last fall prompted strike action earlier this year with teachers including those in Lloydminster marching in sub-zero temperatures to press their case to the government for issues like wages, and class size and complexity.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
