Premiers toast Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show

Forty years on, the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show by the Oilfield Technical Society (OTS) is being saluted by Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers as the 2024 edition begins at the Lloydminster Exhibition Association.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, speaking at the opening banquet on Tuesday, Sep. 10 says it’s no wonder the show has passed the four-decade mark.

“Lloydminster, as the heavy oil capital of Canada – the industry continues to drive economic growth across the city and the country. As much as the resource itself has provided a foundation for prosperity, the industry’s success is propelled by the people who are here,” notes Smith.

The Alberta premier commended the effort of the local energy sector for continuing to do the work to deliver the energy that the world needs. Also, the development of new technologies to tackle the environmental challenges of producing energy.

Battlefords-Lloydminster MP, Rosemarie Falk in addressing the challenges facing the energy sector saluted the technology that is driving the industry forward.

“That is why this biennial show is so inspiring. The innovation, the technology, and the knowledge that is on display showcase the successful path forward for our industry. Thank you to the OTS for putting on this show and for each of you for contributing to the prosperity of this nation,” says Falk.

Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe, speaking on Wednesday, Sep. 11 on the future of the energy sector shared an upbeat outlook.

“I am very bullish on the opportunities we share as Canadian oil producers. I think we have everything to shoot for. I couldn’t be more excited about where we are going after eight challenging years of scraping and scratching to hang on to what we have.”

Mayor Gerald Aalbers, who has a background in the oil sector, on behalf of the host city welcomed all the guests, and led the dignitaries in opening the event by cutting the chain with a bolt cutter.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
