Key events for Truth and Reconciliation Day

Several key events are filling the calendar for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Lakeland College’s Indigenous Support Services will host a Powwow at the Lloydminster Campus on Friday, Sep. 27 from 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The Lloydminster Museum and Archives will host Cultural Connections at Weaver Heritage Park from Sep. 29-30. The first day runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sep. 30, the learnign takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. With input from numerous community partners, the full details are available on the museum’s social media.

In Onion Lake, organizers will hold an afternoon of activities starting just after 12:30 p.m. on Sep. 30 at the Silver Teepee, beside the daycare. A community monument will be unveiled as part of the event to honour the survivors of residential schools. At the height of the Residential School system, Onion Lake had four schools in operation. A meal will be served at the end of the program. More details are on the Onion Lake Community Healing and Wellness social media.

In Wainwright, the Wing Smudge Indigenous Society is hosting its event at Wainwright C-plex from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 28. It will include storytellers and vendors. Stew and bannock will be served after a prayer from one of our elders.

Finally, at 106.1 FM The Goat, the station will air conversations led by Indigenous people across Canada courtesy the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. A Day to Listen will air from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sep. 30.
