Six questions with Justin Vance, candidate for Lloydminster City Council

MyLloydminsterNow has reached out to the 14 candidates running for the six positions on Lloydminster City Council in the November 13 city-wide elections. Here are the views of Justin Vance.

Question 1: Tell me who you are.

Vance: I’m a passionate and energetic young individual dedicated to serving our community. I have lived in this city my whole life, and care deeply for it. I currently work for Vantek as an environmental technician and shop manager. I love being tasked with difficult, and time-consuming jobs, that require the utmost attention to detail. I enjoy time on my family farm and helping whenever I can. I previously worked for a materials testing company that allowed me to see behind the scenes on major city projects, such as the Wastewater Treatment Facility. I’m looking forward to bringing my hard work ethic and my love for this city to the council chambers.

Question 2: Why do you want to be a city councillor?

Vance: Public service has always been a strong interest for me, and I’ve shown this through my involvement in the Lloydminster Youth Council, and as a school councillor through my younger years. I’m running as a candidate who wants to address the core issues our city faces today. It’s time to take a hard look at our budget and ensure that every dollar is spent wisely, addressing the needs of our residents first. I am committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that our resources are directed towards solutions that uplift our community.

Question 3: Colleen Young, candidate for the Saskatchewan Party has said, “Our hospital was built for 15,000 people back in 1986 and has not seen significant expansion. Previous ministers of health have recognized the need to expand the hospital in order to serve patients better. That is another aspect that I would like to see done.”

What are your thoughts on a new or expanded hospital in Lloydminster?

Vance: This issue is one of my top three reasons I decided on running. We need to work with both provincial governments to get the ball moving on a new hospital or a serious expansion of our current facility. As a city councillor, I will fight every chance I get to make sure we get the healthcare we deserve. This facility is no longer capable of serving our city and the surrounding area. We need to put needs in front of wants on the priority list, and healthcare has been seriously pushed back on that list.

Question 4: What is your plan to deal with homelessness and the unhoused?

Vance: We all understand the challenges that homelessness presents, and we must address these responsibly. However, placing the shelter in a residential area has led to increased concerns about safety and quality of life for folks living nearby. Moving the shelter out of a residential neighbourhood will be my top priority as a councillor. We also need to work very closely with caseworkers and The Olive Tree and hear their needs. We need to make our north area of town safe and welcoming again for every resident.

Question 5: What are your thoughts on dealing with crime and insecurity?

Vance: We must strengthen our police force. By investing in more personnel, training, and city bylaw initiatives, we can ensure a responsive, effective police presence that builds trust and maintains order. A stronger police force will deter crime and create a sense of safety every resident deserves.

Question 6: Final thoughts.

Vance: We need to continue to move this city in a forward direction and make sure all our residents are heard. We need to have a city that encourages people and businesses to call Lloydminster home. Together, we can create a city that not only meets our basic needs but thrives on responsible governance and community engagement. Let’s work together to build a future where everyone’s needs are met.

Gerry Lampow
Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
