Rising out of the ruins of the old play space which was consumed by fire is the new inclusive playground at Father Gorman Community School.
A massive community effort that saw the new playground being built in record time is being commended by Lloydminster Catholic School Division and school officials.
“Some of the key things we have are different heights for children to explore. We have lots of bars for upper body strength,” says Scott Young, school principal. “We did not have a swing set on the previous playground. So, we made sure that was included. We have a swing set that can be accessed by kids with different abilities. We are very happy about the ramp that’s out there. The ramp leads up to a special sensory platform. Once you get up to that sensory platform, you can access the Buddy Bus – and that’s on springs. And you can take a wheelchair on and board the bus with a wheelchair.”
The massive community effort saw the rebuild of the playground start after Thanksgiving and wrap up with the Nov. 1 opening to the delight of some 400 students.
The cheers of the children echoed across the schoolyard as they took to the playground after the ribbon cutting.
