Onion Lake RCMP to get get body-worn cameras

Onion Lake RCMP is on the list of Saskatchewan detachments to get body-worn cameras.

Starting November 19, Saskatchewan RCMP says it will roll out the extra gear to Fort Qu’Appelle, with Onion Lake, Black Lake, Fond du Lac, Pelican Narrows, and Punnichy to get suited up in the next four weeks.

The rollout to all remaining RCMP Detachments will take place in a phased approach over the next 8-12 months.

The Lloydminster detachment which is under the Alberta RCMP is in line to get its body cameras but the date is yet to be announced.

The RCMP says in a statement, “Body-worn cameras are part of the RCMP’s ongoing efforts to be transparent and accountable to the communities we serve. The video evidence collected on body-worn cameras will provide an independent, unbiased, and objective way to capture interactions between the public and police officers.”

The cameras will only be switched on in the lawful execution of police duties.

“As we continue to modernize as Saskatchewan’s provincial police service, body-worn cameras will have a role in our ongoing trust-building with the communities and people we serve,” shares Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP.

More information on the RCMP’s launch of body-worn cameras is available online.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
