Man detained after suspicious fire

The Lloydminster RCMP are investigating a case of arson after a suspicious fire at a home in the Border City on Thursday evening.

Both the police and the Lloydminster Fire Department responded to a call of a residence near the intersection of 66 Avenue and 42 Street around 6 p.m. The residence was observed to have smoke coming out of the main structure of the house. Surrounding homes were evacuated as a safety precaution, and the displaced residents were allowed to return to their homes once the scene was cleared up.

After the blaze was brought under control, it was deemed suspicious, according to Sergeant Gerald Walker with the Lloydminster RCMP.

A male was brought into custody at the scene, and taken to the detachment. Walker could not comment on the number of people in the residence at the time of the fire, or whether or not the male who was detained was a suspect in the arson case.

“It’s a continuing investigation,” said Walker.

Walker also said there was significant damage in the main floor of the home.
