Farm fresh eggs safe from food safety rule proposals

Your farm-fresh eggs are safe after Saskatchewan decides to lay off regulating egg farmers produce.

Egg farmers at Saskatchewan farmers markets including Border City Farmers Market were expressing concerns that their livelihood would be affected and consumers access to farm-fresh eggs would be disrupted by proposed changes to the Food Safety Regulations.

“The Saskatchewan Minister of Health has directed that there will not be any need for the grading of eggs sold directly from farmer to consumer in Saskatchewan farmer’s markets. This will ensure that the Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority maintain a common-sense approach to food safety, specific to eggs,” says Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young in an email to MyLloydminsterNow.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health proposals would have targeted food sales, handling, and distribution across the province.

An online survey which was supposed to run until April 2 had to be temporarily closed stating it had reached the maximum number of responses.
