Insurance and Disasters

Staff-Photos-June-2015-004It was the beginning of May and I was thinking to myself what should I review on Lloydminster Now for this month….well then May 3rd comes along when the wildfire in Fort McMurray came into the city and caused the most catastrophic event in Canadian history to date….

We have had clients affected by the mass evacuation order, being forced to leave immediately with very limited contents with them if any at all….Did you know that there is Mass Evacuation coverage under the Additional Living Expenses portion of most owner property policies?  Therefore it is important to keep receipts and to open a claim with your insurer… to keep in touch with your broker and insurer to see when a payment is available.  This will ensure you are NOT too far out of pocket for these additional expenses that will be adding up while living elsewhere and eating out whatever your situation may be.

I was very happy to hear feedback from one of my clients that he took my advice before the fire occurred, he had taken his IPAD and taken photos and video of all the contents in his closets and the bigger contents in the remainder of his rental home and sent that file to another email address….he advised me that he will know exactly what is gone when the time comes to make a claim…

Thank goodness as it will make the process much easier to make the list of all contents damaged due to the fire.

It is always wise to review your policies in detail and ensure that you are aware of the breakdown and details of coverage and to keep an inventory of your home once every year… taking your IPAD around your home to detail your “stuff”  just in case.

Take Care, I know I am already looking forward to July!
