The fire in the Harlan Road area of Onion Lake is 95 per cent contained as of Friday, May 9, at 3:00 p.m.
Onion Lake officials are grateful for regional support, as no one was injured and there was no loss of homes.
Twenty-two families have been evacuated with help from the Red Cross. The affected residents are sheltering in Lloydminster hotels, and the local state of emergency will be lifted on Wednesday, May 14.
A press release states fire crews were called to the scene on May 4, and as of Friday morning, the fire had scorched over 1,500 hectares.
Onion Lake is commending some 100 firefighters, including help from Frog Lake, Mosquito, Frenchman Butte, and citizen volunteers. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency responded with resources from Dorintosh Protection Base and Extended Attack crews from Patuanak, Pinehouse, Clearwater River, English River, Beauval, La Loche, Canoe Lake, Turnor Lake, St George’s Hill, and Flying Dust.
Two helicopters and one water bomber also flew missions to support the battle on the ground.
Several houses will have to be assessed for smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
