Sask NDP exposes government’s lobby firm for sending taxpayer dollars to Trump’s VP

The Sask Party government says it will not stop its contract with a U.S. lobby firm despite the opposition pointing out that taxpayers’ money has been sent to the Republican Party including the U.S. Vice President.

The Opposition, Sask NDP, says it’s analyzing information that shows U.S. law and lobby firm, Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, which has been contracted by the government for 14 years, has sent taxpayers’ dollars to Republican political action committees (PACs) and Republican candidates.

Sask NDP Ethics and Democracy critic, Meara Conway lists the recipients as:

  • J.D. Vance’s Senate campaign – June 2024
  • Marco Rubio – now Secretary of State – political donations over several years
  • Republican Senatorial Committee – $30,000
  • Fund for America’s Future PAC

Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough has been paid $8 million up to 2022, and the contract has been renewed for $1 million or more over the years, says Conway, calling on the government to reveal all its contracts that are sending taxpayers money south of the border.

The Opposition expresses concern that the government is sending money to a firm that is supporting the MAGA movement, which is targeting other economies including Canada.

“It makes no sense,” says Conway.

On the website, opensecrets.org, it shows that Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough has split its donations over the years between the Democrats and the Republicans, almost 48 per cent to the Democrats and almost 52 per cent to the Republicans.

During question period on Wednesday, May 14 in Regina, Premier Scott Moe said the province had been well represented by the lobby firm, as he pointed to the Republican control of the Senate, House and the presidency.
