Students moving on at Bishop Lloyd

With graduations and award ceremonies taking place at schools across Lloydminster, family members and well-wishers packed the gym at Bishop Lloyd Middle School for its awards activity on Wednesday, June 11.

The graduating class was dressed to the nines as they prepare for the step up to the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.

“Our grade 8s are moving on and they will become the graduating class of 2029. Four short years away. Time does fly. They’re moving on with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to do well at the high school,” says school principal, Aaron Canfield.

At the school-wide the celebration of sports and academics across all grades was another saluted aspect.

“Our board member, longtime coach, and community friend, Dianne Gow handed out our proficiency awards. A male and female award is handed out at each of grade level. That award highlights students that are involved in extra-curricular activities and at the same time, keeping a high academic average.”

That’s the type of student that can keep everything in balance and excel while still enjoying school life, adds Canfield.

Another group that continues to put the school and Lloydminster on the map is the Land Based Learning students.

“Mr. Hyland’s Land Based Cultural Leadership class. They always do very well at the Alberta Watershed Competition. We had Dutch Bruce take first place in the competition. Year after year, Mr. Hyland has students finishing in the top five, if not walking away with top place.”

Apart from academics and extra-curricular awards, Bishop Lloyd also handed out community and school awards.

Schools across Lloydminster will continue with similar awards and celebrations as the school year heads for the summer break at the end of the month.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
