Bomb squad dismantles device in Lloydminster backyard

The Alberta Explosive Disposal Unit, or EDU had to dismantle a pipe bomb in a Lloydminster backyard on Thursday, June 12.

At about 9:11 a.m., Lloydminster RCMP received a report that an object that looked like a pipe bomb had been found in the backyard of a home on 41 Street near 49 Avenue.

Lloydminster RCMP cordoned off the area and called the Alberta RCMP EDU to assist.

The bomb squad dismantled the device, and confirmed that it was a pipe bomb.

Lloydminster RCMP is investigating to determine the device’s origin. It is unknown at this time whether this was an isolated incident or if there are other pipe bombs in the area.

“We understand that these situations can be stressful for members of the community and Albertans in general” said Cpl. Christopher Byford, Acting Operations Support NCO for the Lloydminster RCMP. “We are hard at work investigating the issue and getting the answers the public needs in order to ensure their safety.”

You are asked to remain vigilant, not to approach any suspicious object and to report any findings to local police. Lloydminster RCMP will continue to work with the Alberta RCMP EDU and has called in the Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services as well as Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) to assist in the investigation.

Updates will be sent as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
