Women in Saskatchewan who are 45 years and over are now eligible for breast cancer mammogram screening as the province has lowered the age from 47 years.
“Starting breast screening at age 45 is a powerful step in taking control of your health,” says Karen Efthimiou, Vice President of Population Health, Quality and Research at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. “Early detection means more treatment options and better outcomes. It saves lives. Don’t wait for symptoms — be proactive and get screened.”
About 75 per cent of breast cancers are diagnosed in the early stages through the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Screening Program for Breast Cancer, now called BreastCheck.
The province aims to lower the screening age to 40-years and up over the next year.
In Alberta, women 45 years and up are eligible for a mammogram every two years. Women 40 years and over need a referral from their healthcare provider.
