Lloydminster residents praised for helping police officer involved in collision

Lloydminster residents are being praised for helping a police officer who was involved in a vehicle collision and for giving statements to police.

On July 4 at about 11:30 p.m., a Lloydminster RCMP officer was involved in a motor vehicle collision while on patrol duties in the city. Investigators say the collision took place at the intersection of 50 Avenue and 48 Street when another vehicle crossed the centre line and struck the police cruiser.

Police say the other driver fled the scene on foot. RCMP, using the information provided by witnesses, found and arrested the suspect a short time later.

Larissa Berland, 36 years of Frog Lake, SK, was charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a vehicle
  • Operation of a vehicle while impaired
  • Failure to remain at the scene of a collision

Berland brought before a justice of the peace and released on conditions. She is due in Lloydminster Provincial Court on July 22.

The RCMP member involved in the collision sustained minor injuries, was assessed in hospital, and subsequently released.

“We would like to personally extend our gratitude to the members of the public who stopped to assist our officer immediately following the crash,” said Cpl. Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP. “Our quick actions and willingness to remain on scene to provide witness statements greatly assisted our investigation and ensured the safety of everyone involved.”

Police continue to investigate, and anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
