Costco building permits issued: Aalbers

Costco is reportedly moving forward with plans to open a new warehouse in Lloydminster, according to Mayor Gerald Aalbers, who updated the Lloydminster Concerned Citizens for Seniors Care Society at their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Aalbers shared that the city has rubber stamped a building plan, but any invitation for a grand opening has not been circled in the calendar. Costco has a year to proceed with the building permit, noted the mayor.

Costco’s corporate communications remains tight lipped on any further details, particularly on a build that’s more than three months in the future.

Motorists in the area along 75 Avenue South near 12 and 19 Streets would have noticed road expansion to accommodate the development along with traffic lights to be installed at intersections.

Location & Size

As of 2023, the proposed warehouse plan on Lloydminster’s west side, featured approximately 160,000 square feet on a 20-acre site at 75 Ave and 19 St, with about 900 parking stalls.

The site preparation was slated to begin in 2024, with the building completed by August 2025.

What’s Next

With the building permit now issued, developers have up to a year to begin construction. This places the community on notice that Costco could soon be preparing to launch one of its signature large-format retail hubs, and Lloydminster will have one of the over 25 Costco locations in Alberta.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
