UPDATE: Wainwright RCMP are updating the earlier report about a motor vehicle collision in which the driver of a minivan passed away on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Police now report that the minivan was travelling north on Highway 41 and was not attempting to pass any vehicles at the time of the collision. Dashcam footage shows the minivan remained in the northbound lane before crossing over the centre line into the southbound lane, where it collided head‑on with the semi‑truck.
A Wainwright man has passed away following a fatal two‑vehicle collision south of the community on Saturday Feb. 28.
Wainwright RCMP were called to the crash at about 9:00 a.m. after a minivan and a semi‑truck with a trailer collided head‑on along Highway 41 near Township Road 444.
RCMP report that a preliminary investigation indicates the minivan had been attempting to pass another vehicle while visibility was reduced by fresh, blowing snow. The minivan and semi‑truck collided.
The 35‑year‑old man driving the minivan—its sole occupant and a resident of Wainwright—was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 51‑year‑old semi‑truck driver was taken by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released.
A Forensic Collision Reconstructionist from the RCMP’s Eastern Alberta District is assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Wainwright RCMP offered condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
